This is how <work> ends if you get every gem! It’s the SECRET ENDING :O Go check out my big post about <work> here (you can download it!) (if you want!!)
New followers might not know this but I actually made a free little game that you can download (not for macs, sorry D:) and play on your screen and your keyboard.
Over the course a week where I slept very, very little (I’m bad at sleep) I made <work> to keep me… busy?? sane?? Maybe not the second.
Anyway it’s not that great and it’s stupidly hard to get 100% but it made me laugh a few times so… There are the videos on the info page if you just want to see what it’s about rather than play.
One night, almost two weeks ago, I had a night where I didn’t sleep. I have a lot of these! On this particular one, in an attempt to be productive, I scrawled out a silly game idea I never really intended to make. So, of course, I ended up starting to make it. I could have spent the time on much cooler projects or some actual uni work (ha ha… ha) but… I don’t know! I guess that’s just how I work. In sleep deprived bouts of nonsense.
So! I think I’m done with <work> - I’ve tested it myself (obviously) and it seems to play fine, but not on old laptops. If you have a PC that isn’t the worst you can play it too! In fact I’d love you to, that’s why I like to make games.
I’ve tentatively uploaded a copy here for download. It could work! It also could not. I need you to tell me if it does or doesn’t or anything in between. The music is by AA.Kurtz. He’s great! I love his stuff and he was very kind to let me use some of it.
It’s a bit terrible and only has one real level and the TOAD’s text is unchanged from when I first scribbled it out so it’s vaguely off-putting at best but… I kind of like it! I finished something and it feels good. Most of all, doing this has given me some really good practice and taught me a few things that I can use to make something much, much better. I’m going to see this as a stepping stone rather than a game.
Like I said, I’m not 100% sure how well it’ll run but the absolute worst that could happen is that it freezes. This isn’t going to blow up your computer. Oh! But it’s very flashy so don’t play it if you have problems with that.
It’s possible to get every single gem! But it’s difficult. You get a secret ending though, and a prize! If you get this far I’d love to know.

I tried testing <work> on the worst laptop I could get my hands on and… It didn’t play very well. Screens were messed up and it was really slow. Personally I think it looks way better like this but it’s pretty much unplayable… Guess I’ll spend tomorrow after lectures trying to make it work on slower machines >:|
(repostin at a time people actually use tumblr - I should have this done and up for download in a day or two)
some <work> gameplay!
It’s exciting because I contacted aa.kurtz (who’s music in YFTGH is PERFECT) and asked him if I could use his stuff in this game and maybe others in the future and he said yes and was so cool about it, he even offered to make new tracks for bigger projects.
exciting!!!

the TOAD is a great character, I think. Because it is me when I haven’t slept, and that is the best character.
I almost didn’t want to post the dialogue it says in-game but then I was all SHRUG it’s easy to miss it because you’re so focused on gems. I just finished putting it all in now and I really like the weird atmosphere it causes when mixed with the gameplay and flashy colours.
Gosh, finally finished testing the level. It’s possible to get every gem! But some parts are very tricky. It took me so many goes…
I just need to add in all the TOAD’s words, tweak a few things, chuck in an ending and then it should be done!

I love these colours. In-game they’re all fading and merging into other ones and it’s confusing and off-putting and I love it.
Testing the same part over and over isn’t as dull as I thought it’d be but it’s still hard making sure that it’s possible to get every gem.
…GEMS!! HA HA.
OH YEAH, there’s a rising thing that kills you too so there’s that
